Magazine Genre

First of all I had to decide on what genre of music I was going to base my magazine. I researched the most popular genres of music which were:
  • Classical
  • Metal
  • Pop
  • Rock
  • Alternative
  • Indie
  • Folk
  • Punk
  • Electronica
  • Dance
  • Trance
  • Drum and Bass
  • Jazz
  • RnB
  • Rap
From this, I decided to use rock because there are a lot of magazines about rock music from which I could get influence. It would also be a good genre for me to do as it is the one I most listen to so I would have an interest.

Prelim Contents Page

I chose my favorite three pictures and put them into my document. I then manipulated them so they were circular and added drop shadows. Then I positioned and layered them on top of each other. I then decided on the names of the subtitles and articles to include in my contents. Using the house theme of the logo colors, I created a similar title to the front page and also subtitles and articles.
I like the overall page as it is not over powering and the circular pictures create a nice effect, especially with the drop shadows. I also like the positioning of everything on the page.
I don't particularly like the font and would chose another one if I were to do it again.

Prelim Front Cover

After choosing my title, font and subtitles, I created my front cover, taking colors for the font from the school logo.
I like the colors for the font as it goes well with the picture and logo. I also like the contrast of the black and white against the color and also that strength of the colors which I chose to keep.
I don't like the font as it is boring and also the whole cover itself is a little dull. If I were to do it again I would probably make the cover a bit more busy so it was more eye-catching.

Manipulating chosen photo

Once I had chosen my picture, I manipulated it to enhance the colors that I wanted to be more obvious. I liked the contrast that this created and thought it had more of an impact than the original photo.

Photos for my prelim front cover

For my school magazine, I took a selection of photos of which I chose my favorite three that I may like to use for my front cover. The one i chose to use is of the two girls on the computer together.

Preliminary Task Brief

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.
